Dual Boot Windows 10 & Ubuntu
Installing ubuntu 18.04 alongside windows 10 step by step.

Preparing our Environment & Required Tools
- We will need at least a 4GB USB Drive
- Internet Connection
- 25GB available storage — recommended
Step 1 : Shrink Volume
Enter the amount of space to shrink
Step 2 : Installing Ubuntu
Choose the type of the installation ( Desktop OR Server )
PS : Desktop installation is to replace your system or to try it and even run it alongside, and for the Server installation is to run it on a virtual box.
In our case we need Dual boot so we will go for Desktop Version.
Choose the minus -1 Version (if you are looking for stability and long term support) Be sure to check all the requirements mentioned.
Start downloading.
Step 3 : Creating a Live USB
Live USB
Just to make it more clear : Live USB is a type of LiveDistro, which refers to a distribution of any operating system that can boot and run from removable media. That capacity makes it possible for users to carry their operating system of choice for use on other computers.
Download the software — Etcher
Then Execute the installation
What is Etcher ?
Etcher is a free and open source program for flashing images to SD cards & USB drives And it supports different platforms such as Windows, MacOS, and Linux.
Now all you have to do is to insert the USB stick get the iso image of Ubuntu and click on flash
Everything is ready now we are good to go for the System installation
1. Insert the CD or Flash
2. Reboot your machine
3. Tap on F12
4. Choose a language and install Ubuntu
PS : You can have this instead because it depends the computer’s configuration, so just use your mouse or cursor keys to select.
>>Choose the Keyboard Layout
>> Connect to your Network
>>Choose the Installation that you want to start with
>>The Updates and third party
Now it’s time to select an Installation Type : You can choose to Install Ubuntu
alongside Windows and that will automatically take care of all the partition steps, to erase the disk (means no more windows) or finally to choose your customize configuration.
It is recommended to create 3 partitions
This first partition is :
/root : It is the directory where file system exists and all the software will be installed.
This Second partition is :
/home : Holds user and their files and also holds configuration files separate from the operating system files.
This Third partition is :
/swap : Just in case your memory is filled up completely, any additional applications will be run off of the SWAP partition rather than memory (This part is invisible for user).
1. Select the Free Space that you shrink in windows earlier
2. Click +
3. Insert the Size
4. Click OK, Now /root is Created
- Select the Free Space that you shrink in windows earlier
- Click +
- Insert the Size
- Click OK, Now /home is Created
>>Now the rest of free space is for the home partition
>> All done click on install now
>>After clicking on Install now, you will have this Massage to confirm or
to go back
Now Take acup of coffee because it may take some time
There are two easy ways , but as user of windows still used of Interface.
We will install Grub-Customizer via our terminal to configure Grub 2.0
Just type this three lines to get the software:
$sudo add-apt-repository ppa:danielrichter2007/grub-customizer
$sudo apt-get update
$sudo apt-get install grub-customizer
- Select windows 10
- Click on the upper Arrow until Windows 10 is on Top
